It's just the general motion of exiting traffic having to cross entering traffic, aka weaving, that destroys the flow of mainline at those locations. At Deerfoot's volume, the only fix is braided ramp/basketweaves like what is currently going in southbound between Southland and Anderson/Bow Bottom.
Pinning traffic in the left lane would have no tangible impact, unless you could separate the left lanes from the rest of the mainline... aka collector-distributor system.
