For young kids and early adults I think its important to keep them busy, doing things that make them feel good about themselves. I realize that money is important, however if they struggle to find work, you might consider having them look for a job as a volunteer. You never know where and what it will lead to. At least he will be associating with some really good types.

My son got a job volunteering at the Foothills Hospital before starting University. It kept him busy, allowed him to practice his people skills, and looks great on a resume. I think it was really good for him and did a lot to help him in his later professional life.

2 of my interns paused their University educations to work for me and both excelled, worked well, killed it when they went back and the experience led to jobs. I'm hoping this holds true for my current intern.
