As much as I hate the overdone/fake pops and burbles, one of the most glorious sounds I've ever heard was the noise from a 458 Italia downshifting.

I agree with cars generally being a poor investment...but I did manage to buy into the air-cooled 911 market just before things took off, so I did get a nice 5x return when I sold my 964. I mean it was pure luck and I would've bought it anyway, but I make sure to bring that up to my wife every once in a while (even though she's actually pretty cool about it all, and one of the reasons she was A1 marriage material).
But yeah, it's a hobby, and hobbies cost so money. Still better than pissing it away on booze or drugs or gambling. I think I'm actually pretty decent at minimizing the losses. I've never bought a new car in my life (I can just never get past the depreciation dropoff) and tend to buy things near the bottom of the price curve, so even if I lose money it's typically nothing too drastic. Most of the biggest depreciation has been on my wife's cars...but that's because they naturally tend to be newer since the priority there is different.
