While the government fell quickly, the large portions of the military fought throughout the whole war, sometimes as free French, and often under the command of other allies like Britain. If people want to call their politicians cowardly, fine, but many of the soldiers were extremely brave.
In a way, the Spanish Civil War was actually the start of WWII as essentially a proxy war for nations on either side of the ideologies at play there.
