As time passed, his personal familiarity with players outside the org declined, and his late acquisitions of old guys (Nolan, Amonte) was the direct result of him remembering them from their primes.
Then of course he got fleeced by Burke in the Phaneuf trade and everyone with PTSD from the Gilmour deal saw exactly where we were headed.

That Phaneuf trade was also him basically trying to save his brother Brent by retooling an underperforming team mid-season. That did work, Darryl took most of the blame.
