Maybe the petroleum industry has wrecked environments in some parts of the world but not here in Alberta.

Tell me an occasion in Alberta where zones below the ground have been adversely affected by drilling. I am sure you are referring to groundwater contamination which would be the most important thing adeversly impacted oil or gas drilling.

There are roughly 350,000 wells drilled in Alberta and pretty much zero impact to groundwater. There are however many cases of farmers who allow runoff of sewage (from things such as hog farms) to flow into aquifers which have caused much more actual problems.

I am all for the elimination of SUv's and the such but to say the petroleum industry has raped this province is absolutely wrong. Which I assume you were not meaning. The actual drilling is quite harmless but the burning of these fuels is quite another matter that I know much less about.
I don't know about the drilling, but getting oil from the tar sands wreaks a lot of environmental havoc.
