But there’s no excuse for Lydman. Dealing him for a 3rd round pick, when he was already an established 2nd pairing d-man, and went on to be a really good #3D for 10 more years, was just inexplicable. One of the most under-recognized bad trades in the team’s history.
I think you’re absolutely right that Sutter had a very narrow definition of what he wanted in players, and that caused him to really over/under value a lot of guys and make bad deals.

They didn't give Stralman a real look. When they made that deal (Stuart, 7th round pick for Primeau and a 2nd rounder) I thought it was a savvy way to dump cap but also pick up a good prospect. Instead they flipped him to CBJ before the season started where he put up 34 points in 73 games that season.
Those two come to mind together because I view them both as examples of really good NHL dmen, but ones that didn't fit Sutter's view so were dumped for poor returns.
