Everyone has their own level of interest and passion in hockey. I have zero interest in watching baseball and would rather watch paint dry, but if the blue jays were in the world series I'd say 'I hope they win it'. Probably a bad example as there is currently one Canadian team, but back in the Expos/Blue Jays days I'd cheer for either. That makes me a casual bandwagon fan. Back in those days I wouldn't go to a hardcore expos fan and tell them they should cheer for Toronto because they are canadian.
At my work I'm definitely outspoken about how much I hate the oilers and am a diehard flames fan, to which some say 'I'd like a canadian team to win. Wait, who's left in the playoffs again?'. They actually didn't know so are cheering for the oilers. Casual fan. That's fine. Just don't ask a loyal flames fan to 'cheer for a canadian team'. Especially on a calgary flames fan site.

Yeah, pretty much this.
And don't frame it as "growing up" that we would dispose of a decades-long rivalry to join hands with a team of scumbags and criminals that essentially broke the lottery system.
Flames fan or not, I'd pick every single other option over Satan's horse. Not choosing the Oilers is a pretty mature decision in itself.
Casual fans who get behind them just aren't in the loop enough to understand how abhorrent the organization is to know better, and that's their excuse.
