Since moderation on this site became relaxed to the point of barely existing, it has become dominated by a small number of highly active, antagonistic, unhappy people who are here mainly to jeer at their political opponents. I guess giving them free rein is one way to try to sustain engagement rates on the site as the number of participants declines relentlessly.
