Not sure the Flames have to try to tank to be a lottery team. Nashville certainly didn’t set their sights on tanking, yet they found themselves a part of the lotto mix by the time the season was halfway finished.
The Flames have an aging roster with a few young pieces. Age starts catching up with a couple of guys and the goaltending takes a step back and they could be standing in Nashville’s shoes next year. At this point a tear down isn’t in the cards, but that doesn’t mean this team is lottery proof.
Maybe some are still holding out for a roster implosion, but I would gather most folks just see a veteran based team who has been outside the playoffs for a couple of years as being closer to the bottom of the pack than the top.
