Hand made patty
Good meat-bun ratio
Patty must cover at least the surface area of the bun
Bun should be on the lighter side, none of this brioche crap
Fresh toppings and crisp tomatoes (soggy tomatoes ruin a burger)
Hearty amount of cheese
Sauces to preference
Bonus points for bacon and onion rings

Agreed. I don't understand the brioche, sour dough and Kaiser bun type trend for burgers. It's like having a leathery or difficult to chew bread for a burger.
Dinner buns are great if you want soft and fluffy. A home made bread/bun is great too. Something denser is fine but not if it's annoyingly hard to tear.
