Not to defend O’Reilly on that front, but I’ve never noticed any correlation between being a responsible person off the ice and winning on it. Loads and loads of players who were numbskulls off the ice have lifted the Cup. Did anyone ever say Patrick Kane wasn’t the kind of guy you win with?
The ‘you can’t win with O’Reilly’ narrative became a thing when O’Reilly said players on ####ty teams that lose a lot have difficulty giving 100 per cent every game. Which is absolutely true, but taboo to say out loud.
Back when Al MacInnis was with the Flames, he commented in an interview that NHLers are typically only dialled in for around three-quarters of the games they play in the regular season. That candour caused a minor kerfuffle in the local media at the time. I can only imagine if he’d said that 25 years later. I guess people would be talking about MacInnis not being the kind of player you win with.
