Most team names somehow relate to the history or culture of the region they either originated in or currently represent. I couldn't find anything online about how or why mammoths are connected to Utah, but I didn't look too hard. Not too far from there in Hot Springs South Dakota, there is a place called the National Mammoth site which has the remains of a lot of male mammoths. It's one of the largest discoveries of Mammoth fossils and it's very concentrated. Theory is this may have been
This whole part of Eastern Montana, the Dakota's, Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado has a lot of fossils. The Dinosaur National momument that borders Utah and Colorado isn't that far from SLC.
So as Science starts to win out...and today's Utah is likely a bit more diverse that that from 30 years ago. This probably does become a big part of the regions history.
