I don’t think Cliff was saying Hamilton would be included. He could, if the Canucks wanted a Tkachuk like deal but his proposal of Nemec/Silayev + Mercer + a pick (2nd) seems reasonable.
I think he was saying Hamilton gets moved in a separate trade. I don’t really agree that the Canucks don’t have much leverage, they do. Rutherford is pretty shrewd. Do the Devils want to strike now and get Quinn at 25, or wait until he’s 27? A lot can happen in two years and it would probably be best for the Devils to make that deal now, if the Canucks are willing. The Canucks don’t have to do anything for the short-mid term. So, the Devils will need to consider that. Also need to consider what the potential distraction would be, for years, of players constantly having this cloud over them of ‘who’s getting traded for Quinn?’ If it is as inevitable as that, just get on with it. Probably best for both sides. The Canucks do have leverage and the Devils will have to pay up, to a certain extent.
I’ve heard this thought being discussed on various podcasts but it’s not that dissimilar from the Tkachuck trade. At the time rumours were the Blurs offering Tarasenko, Scandella and a first (I believe), and the Canes had something around Necas. Florida came in and kicked the door down. They got aggressive and made the deal. That trade was good a good one. It was just the Huberdeau extension that was the misstep for the Flames.
