Guentzel didn't even handle the puck. He got into reach of the puck and immediately tapped the puck left for the break away. At the time that he moved the puck, Tkachuk was more than 15 feet away (and they were moving in the same direction toward the Panthers net).
Note: NHL faceoff circles are 30 feet in diameter.
With the puck already gone, Guentzel is just past the center dot and Tkachuk was outside of the advertising text that is outside of the line of the faceoff circle turning to make his hit. 15+ feet away and he had to change direction to close the gap and then make his hit. Granted, he did close the gap quickly... but that only makes the situation worse considering the distance and timing.
That was a dumb penalty and I would not be surprised if it turns into a suspension with it being a major penalty at the end of a game.
