So if an actor is under contract to a show or movie, their Expo contract almost always had a clause to give them an 'out' of the Expo contract if the show called them in to work.
This bit is more anecdotal, but I'd often heard that was/is the only way to get some folks to show up at a Con, as actors simply won't risk their "bread and butter" contracts for Con money, so if you don't give them an out if needed, they simply won't even TRY to come.
