Oh boy...
I've posted this a few times, but will say it again. Over the span of it's release a decade ago, it took me about 5 tries before the game clicked with me and I got into it. Each time was same as you; stuck on the intro tutorial and just got bored/frustrated after a while and gave up. Waited a few years, tried again.
Finally last year I powered through it and yes it does get better once you get past that part. Takes a bit of learning to learn the whole menu screens too, but after that the game is pretty fun. I never beat the game though, eventually I ran into a mission where you have to extract a few of the vehicles in some base and I just couldn't beat it. Got annoying to have no checkpoint and start over every time. I felt like I had accomplished what I set out to do and at least experience the game as it was meant to be felt, so no shame is quitting at that point.
So yes, it does get better if you can make it past the intro. Took me literally 10 years, but worth it
