I don't think a player in the AHL losing a spot has anything to do with it (why would that matter anyway? You need way more than 6 D in any playoff run).
This is a clear indication that they see him as an NHLer aside from things like strength, bulking up in general. The kid has played ~150 games over the last two seasons and will benefit more from resting, training and being ready to go in September. If he plays a handful of games at the world championships, it will be a nice experience to add and will likely be safer route as opposed to being hit by men going full tilt in the AHL playoffs.
The last thing you want is for him to get nicked up in an AHL playoff game and lose a whole summer of training/preparation for the NHL season.
