I don't really agree with Rasmus's "real fans" comment. Real fans IMO support the team no matter what, whether tanking, competing, or stuck in the mushy middle. I actually have more of an issue with fans that say they would not watch or support the team if it tanks.
It's just a fact that the NHL rewards teams that tank. I've been beating the drum for years, but they should come up with a more equitable system for distributing draft picks because it is ridiculous that tanking and poorly managed teams can accumulate an embarrassment of riches while teams that try to compete every year but fall short can easily get stuck in that rut. Every non-playoff team should be given better odds of getting high draft picks.
Sorry, this is going pretty OT, but I just don't think it's an issue with the fans if they want a shot at potential franchise players that are almost always only available with high draft picks. Every fan should want that opportunity because those are the kinds of players that bring you success in the long term.
