Because the team’s biggest problem is goal scoring, and he’d plug into the top line.
He’s big, fast, and plays heavy. He’s trending like a guy who’s going to score 35-40 goals every year for the next decade. He gives me Rantanen vibes as a guy who you win playoff rounds with. That’s obviously a personal opinion, but it’s what I see when I watch Leafs games.
I’m not naïve. I know it will take assets to acquire him, that the Leafs will match any lowball offers, and ultimately the acquisition cost needs to make sense. Do I think he’s worth the money/draft capital in the 1st + 3rd round compensation level? Absolutely. Do I think he’s worth it in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd round? If it’s in the high 6’s, low 7’s? Maybe. I don’t know enough about the Leafs salary cap structure to know if that’s an offer they match.
