I don't think it should change and make things more complicated.

Imagine the Flames next year getting 92 points and earning a spot in the playoffs, only to have the rules change and a team with 97 points makes it in instead because Pittsburgh, Boston and whomever else were absolutely horrible and gave up a lot of points to them. Would that be more fair? Or would it be less fair? I think it is less fair.

You compete to make the playoffs with teams in your conference. That's the fairest thing to do.
^An annoying talking point that people keep repeating for some reason.

3 bad teams at the bottom of the conference isn't relevant when you have more good teams to balance it out.

Looking at the updated numbers, nothing has really changed. The east got 1450 points while the west got 1445. Virtually no difference. As for goal differential, the east was +20 while the west was -20. Spread out over 512 cross-conference games, it's practically zero. Empty net goals account for most of the difference anyway.

Flames should be playing postseason hockey.
