Imbalanced NHL scheduling actually makes it a bit hard to compare conference to conference and division to division in seasons where the three worst teams in the league (by a pretty fair margin) all play in the Western conference.
It's still super annoying that the Flames will have more points than 2 eastern playoff teams and probably will miss, but at least some of that is because the imbalanced schedule.

There are teams in each conference that you play well and others you don't - they swept NYR, NJD, NYI and PHI 2-0 each, so playing them more probably replaces CHI, SJS and NSH.
The difference in their schedule would be marginal, and the bottom line is that it took fewer points to make it in the east, especially the Met.
