Signing bonus is even $21.8 MM per year over the life of the contract. Advantages for the player are that is guaranteed even in work stoppage and is paid in Florida where he lives (so no Canadian or US State taxes on that part). Base salary starts at $17 MM and declines down to $6.25 MM by the final year. That probably helps the Jays stay competitive from an after-tax compensation point of view with less total dollars.
The declining arrangement might make the final 2 years movable with little retention if they traded him with an effective date after the 2nd last signing bonus installment was paid, as after that he'll be owed $34.3 total for 2 years of service. I could see a team trying to boost their payroll for MLBPA compliance reasons being interested in that as his AAV will still be $35.7 MM. Hopefully he is highly productive for the first ~8 years. If the Jays win a WS nobody will care about the end of the deal.
