As far as humanizing Trump, he basically just recounted what happened. It's reasonable to interpret that as Trump moderating himself, obviously, but not sure what you want Maher to do aside from not go in the first place. If Trump was on his best behaviour that's really all he can report; i.e. nothing crazy happened.
Maher is just... not funny and so smug he's basically unwatchable. His panelists always seem to mirror that tone. I don't know who that show is for or why it's still on.

Well Maher was clearly pissed at the one panelist who downplayed his dinner, arguing that Trump essentially played Maher.
