I think there may be some myths here. The Toronto market is strong. People just need some hope and a good story, and don’t like bs messaging. So losing him, if a good return came back, would’ve been just fine.
To those saying they shouldn’t care about what happens in ten years, then why shouldn’t they have given him 20 year deal? We should always care about what management does because it screws over the next generation. It’s like a politician screwing the next generation over. In this case I don’t blame Atkins and crew as it was likely a public pressure thing that pushed ownership further, but you know with whomever the next star is, they’ll look to sign him up early, like Whitt Jr. They messed up bigtime to get it to this point and sign him for his max. If he wants to be a legend he has to live up to the expectations and after year ten continue to be a starter. He bent management over, and that’s fine, but he has to live up to high expectations that he set by signing this deal. It’s all on him now. If he doesn’t live up to expectations and fans boo, he’s to blame.
