Exactly. I could see a few teams offering him $14 million… so a team stepping forward with $15 million would separate themselves from the pack. That’s what it often takes for teams that are considered less desirable to get top players.
Chicago might be an example. With the rumours of Bedard’s potential hesitancy to sign this summer, they no longer have the luxury of being patient with their rebuild. They have to get better now and they have to get players to help Bedard get better.
Like I said… I think it would be a mistake for the flames to pay Marner $15 million and I don’t think Conroy will do that. I’m just saying that overpaying players to come play for Calgary is usually the only way to get it done.
Really hoping Conroy stays away from big game hunting in free agency again this summer. Build from within and see what happens. Keep giving young players (Zary/Coronato/Parekh/Suniev/Klapka/Brz/etc.) bigger roles on the team. If young players take a big step and the team is competitive - great! If they struggle next year with young players taking on bigger roles and end up with a top pick in a draft that has an extremely elite prospect at the top - great!
