Republican administrations are more in favor of support for oil and gas. The current President wanted KXL and wants more energy projects/low cost energy solutions. If industry officials on both sides of the border are in agreement for collaboration if and when tariff war subsides , why would that be a bad thing for Canada's number 1 industry by GDP? I am not referring to Canada as a whole but the industry which is what she was referring to. This environment isn't good for anybody but let's say cooler heads prevail soon with this man (1 man) made chaos and things stabilize.

Would other Presidential candidates previously or future progressive candidates be better suited for helping Canada's energy industry, which should be 10-15 X larger than the auto industry?

Effectively and bottom line she said that her fear is energy friendly Republicans may lose the midterms due to stupidity and that would negatively affect Canada's energy industry as a whole. I am not sure what is so controversial about that statement. Smith deserves some blame for some of her stances on some things for sure but I don't think that statement is really out of line in context to the energy industry.
First off, it's not our # industry by GDP. Yes, it is significant.

You state many things the current president is in favour of, and things that may happen. I think it's foolish to begin to think you can assume anything about Trump, and it would be even more foolish to enter into economic plans with him. Carney is right, it's over. Time to stop pretending it isn't. "Let's say cooler heads prevail" is not a strategy.

Her fear is she's going to lose the chance she thinks she has to leverage Alberta against Canada. And even if you believed she was somehow capable of pulling off any sort of deal (and I'd really have to question your intelligence based on her past deals) you are still gambling on Trump caring at all about any other country and how it works out for them. That's dumb. I don't want to tie my horse to a crazy train. I certainly wouldn't be leveraging our province's economic future on it.
