As with you I never played the first game and as you say the first 30+ hours are incredible but it's also petering out for me as well. This game has to have the worst difficulty scaling I can remember. It starts off very difficult and at the halfway mark becomes trivial. You don't even need to use the master strike as you can win nearly all combat by positioning your sword high and then quickly dropping to a low jab, repeat, repeat. Everything from thieving to dice becomes so easy that I stopped doing the side quests out of boredom and just remained on the main quest to get to the end. It's still a very good experience as the storytelling is next level, but it's ultimately let down by poor balancing.
