The 787 and the A380 are two different tools meant to serve two different markets, the big question is which market is bigger.

The coolest thing about the 787 is that b/c of the use of composite materials, the cabin pressure can be set 'lower' resulting in a more comfortable flight. IIRC with regular planes they set the cabin pressure to the equivalent of 8,000 ft above sea level because it causes less stress on the metals in the airframe but unfortunately more stress on the passengers.
