Having a team with enough talent to keep you fighting for a playoff spot but not being a contender and not bad enough to bottom out what is happening here. And in 3-4 years we will be selling off Frost and Farabee and guys and doing this all over again with a new GM and a new vision of doing the same things.

I appreciate your perspective and agree that absent a true 1c this team is going to struggle to be anything beyond a 6-8 team in the west. Some teams made a conscious effort to acquire high end talent, and while they won’t intentionally take such steps, absent moves in the offseason to add more of a veteran footprint next year the Flames may well be in the position you expected them to occupy this year.
The Flames need a center who can drive line 2, and while he may not end up being the cheese on that cracker, paying a second to find out if he is doesn’t tell me the Flames are pushing the chips in for the next couple of seasons.
