The alternative is that every injured player would have to completely abstain from any kind of skills practice until medically cleared to play – at which point, if the injury was long enough to require LTIR, he'd be so far from game condition that he'd have to shut down for the rest of the season. These guys need to keep in training, and it can't all be done in the gym.
