Meeting the same teams every year really builds that hatered, and elevates the games during the regular season as well. For example Toronto vs Boston, and Pittsburgh vs Washington, etc.

It is manufactured rivalries. Just like the point system is manufactured parity.
Remember when Lou had us playing 8x vs each team in division. We played the Wild 8 times a year while missing 1 eastern division.
