Just a heads up, if this is what you're actually looking at doing, I would highly recommend against the .270.
Nothing against it, I have a .270 and I love it...for hunting.
What I don't like is going out and spending $30-60 for a box of ammo.
If you've got that kind of money, awesome, have at 'er.
Otherwise stick with something like the .22, or .17 HMR, you can shoot all day and not break the bank.
Oh, also, you mentioned the bear thing again with the shot gun.
Don't do that.
That is at least as bad as your spear idea.
