Not how it works, iirc. They get paid by their old team because they are under contract, but they still have a responsibility to find employment. If it's less than their previous contract, the previous team has to make up the difference.
So if Babcock got hired by Toronto at 5 million, was fired, and found a job in Ottawa for 2 million, the Leafs are still on the hook for 3, for the life of whatever contract he signed with Toronto.
