He's also 60 years old at the moment. Outside of Paul Martin, Canadians haven't historically been thrilled about the idea of electing senior citizens to high office (unlike the idiots to the South).
The advantage Ford will have is if Carney does manage to get elected due to existential threat of Trump I suspect Canada will be well and truly ready to dump the Liberals once that's gone, 15 or so years of the Liberals will likely be about all the country will go for and pretty much anything in a blue will get to be PM, in essence all Ford has to do is get the Tory leadership, voter apathy and desire for change will do the rest
