On the other hand, the Flames defense is phenomenal. That is more easily attributed to good coaching that a litany of poor choice making in the offensive zone.

The defense is not close to Phenomenal. They give up the 10th most high danger chances against in the league. Dustin Wolf is 6th in total goals saved above expected (min 22 games) and 7th in Goals saved above average per 60, and they are clinging to the second wildcard spot.
They are 26th on the PK with an elite goalie. They are 18th on the PP. Funny how the no forward talent team is better on the PP than the PK with a genius defensive coach.
This team is not well coached in any of the three zones.
Husky hockey sucks, and he would be getting ridiculed daily if not for Wolf.
