We already tax people who can barely afford a house like they are rich (The median house costs the 95th percentile income and we tax that income at 50-65% on the margin depending on the jurisdiction).
The only way forward is to massively increase our GDP.

If only we had some natural resources we could sell....

Also, in terms of military spending, lets start with a $10b base in Churchill along with 5 icebreakers.
