Another way to look at it is Necas was on a 2 year deal and likely gets dealt next season. Would he get the same return? Probably not.
While they screwed thrmsleved this year they have assets now and cap space to stretch things out.

The deal wasn't bad it is just feels like a weird trade though for a team that is in a win now type of environment. They have always seemed to lack a little bit of the elite level players who would be able to push them over the hump and it seemed like they had that in Rantanen (even if he didn't perform up to those expectations initially).
I guess it is hard to say but what would Necas have been able to return next year at the trade deadline? I just happen to think that a futures move makes the most sense in the long term but I thought that their window was now not in 4-6 years from now.
