I like what Carolina did. They didn't just succumb to the classic, "we're contenders so we're just going to add". Instead they looked realistically at their chances of signing Rantanen and they got a solid package back involving futures. Dallas is also aging, and those futures may be worth some high picks. So they do alright now but also set themselves up for the future. I like that thought process.
Boston and Philly also did well in their trades with the Leafs. Laughton isn't worth a 1st round pick, but Philly managed that. Leafs needed a D, and Carlo fills that void, but they gave up a lot with Minten and a 1st.
All in all, very odd that last year was considered a mediocre draft but teams didn't deal their 1sts. This year 1sts were dealt all over the place for less talent.
