Fair enough. I hear ya. The world is super messed up. I probably didn't do the best job myself with my comments. I was just excited about putting a new brick into my computer. As a father of three very young kids, video gaming on the PC is my only outlet.
But, now that we've cleared the air, let me comment on some of your feedback just for context.
- The MSI Suprim, according to the stats page, has a TDP of 575W using the BIOS silent mode (default). So what I did was put a power limit on that to limit it to 90%. What Youtube and reddit have told me is that even at 90% you're only losing 2-3% but gaining more in efficiency.
- According to the same documentation, the TDP of the "gaming" BIOS is 600W
- The cable that I'm using is rated for 600W. So I'm a bit nervous of using a cable that has a watt limit that is bumping right up against the power draw for the card. So another reason to only draw 90%.
- I've ordered a new cable that uses the 12V-2x6 specification and has a limit of 675W. Again, still not a lot of room to play with but more room than my other cable. Then, I can go back to 100% and try out the "gaming" BIOS hoping that the cables are sufficient and I don't burn the house down.
Hopefully that's more context. I will point out that I am no means an expert here. I've watched a few Youtube videos, read some reddit posts and have come to these conclusions.
This release of the 50 series has been a disaster. There are far too many problems for a normal consumer to deal with or even be exposed to. We shouldn't have to worry about TDP and cables and melting connectors. Nvidia is supposed to "just work" both the hardware and drivers. I remember way back when, I bought a 9700Pro from ATI and I had problem after problem with drivers. So I returned it, went with an Nvidia card and never looked back. This 50 series launch and shaken that trust I had. But given that they are the only player in the high performance video card game, I'm not sure what else I can do other than buy and deal with the problems.
