I've had discussions with Americans who believe that the reason why most Canadians live with a few hundred kilometers of the U.S. border is because we want to be in the U.S., with no understanding to how latitude affects climate and carrying capacity. They believe that Canadians were "left behind" when the U.S. formed and the border was established, and they somehow did us wrong by letting that happen.
I'm a Canadian working in the Midwest US and this is actually pretty accurate to explain the dissonance many Americans (Especially MAGA Americans) have through these times. They view America as essentially the world's best country on virtually all measures with a wide gap between them and everyone else. They believe that the entire world wants to be American. They don't view the 51st state language as hostile towards Canadians but rather as a message of endearment that they hold Canadians in such high regard as to potentially accept them as fellow Americans.
