Mine used to clog significantly more due to the way the rest of the family was basically abusing them. Once I started doing a few "light loads" (basically something that was just rinse to clean, add no detergent and set it on sanitize/equivalent), I'm not dealing with a minor repair/unclogging once per quarter. I'm dealing with them like once or twice every 1-2 years. I'm assuming it's also helping to alleviate the damage from certain "overloads" that occur on occasion.
Eggshells, scrambled eggs and onions are the primary clogging offenders for dishwasher; stickers, paper and gravel for washer, at my home.

My washer has an actual tub clean cycle. The dishwasher I run an empty load with a cleaning product about twice a year.
