Like you said, that was an embarrassing read. He tries to defend Gretzky but his analysis has no substance. He can claim that Wayne is a great Canadian but actions speak louder than words. Patriotic Canadians have great pride for the country and certainly would be proud to receive the Order of Canada. The fact that it’s been over 16 years and he can’t respect the award to attend the ceremony speaks volumes about his character.
The article was written from the perspective of someone who basically says “he’s my friend so leave him alone” while ignoring what caused the outcry in the first place.
Personally, if Wayne wants to disassociate with Canada then that’s his right, but don’t make a mockery by accepting the role of honorary captain for a country you’ve moved on from. Bobby can defend his character, yet where is Wayne in all of this? If it truly meant anything to him he would try to make things right.
