If the Oilers can't finish this year and win the cup, their window pretty much slams shut, Bouchard no matter how bad he is, and he's not good, is still going to get a significant raise over his current 3.9 million, he's got the Oilers over the barrel in any negotiation.
With McJesus, his contract is up at the end of next year, he's going to be under tremendous pressure to get the largest contract possible and set the next bench mark. With the Salary cap going to 95.5 million next year, so McDavid could become a roughly 18 million dollar player I think.
Skinner is also up for a contract after next year, so he's certainly going to get more then the 2.9 he's playing for.
For next year with the 95.5 million dollar cap, the Oilers will walk in with about 18 million in cap space. needing to find or resign 7 players.
They also don't have great prospects nor trade assets.
The Oilers could be the greatest team that never was and have pissed away a ton of draft picks.
