I always have trouble ranking the original cast movies, because outside of V they were all really good movies. But UC holds a special place for me because I remember sniffling at the ending with Kirk's final log.
Its interesting the original plan was to bring Saavik back and have her act as the traitor. It would have certainly been a bit of a heart punch. Meyer's had reached out to Robin Curtis to do the role, but Roddenberry felt that Saavik was too beloved of a character to do it.
In the end Kim Catrell did a great job in that role. Her confession was a great speech. but it would have been a really hard turn.
There was a lot of controversy at the time over Spock using the mind meld to rip the truth out of Valeris' mind with people equating it to Spock raping her or at least torturing her. They tried to fix it in the book, but it was a shocking moment for Trek fans.
