I mean it's all pageantry at the end of the day. It doesn't matter at all how many times a black rubber disc goes in one goal or another. But we decide to make it important to us. Same goes for adding a national context to the sport, and once you're there it's a small step to politics and international rivalry elsewhere bleeding over.

So yeah, you're right, but once you suspend your sense of proportion and decide to care about sports in the first place there's nowhere left to stand to criticize people about caring more due to current events.
