Tons of retro handhelds have been released since my last post. Anbernic alone released something like 10 of them. I’ve looked at some of the high end devices like the Odin 2 Portal but it’s nearly the cost of a Steam Deck so hard to justify.
The midsized, and reasonably priced, Retroid Pocket 5 is great, and probably enough for most people. I prefer Linux over Android for retro gaming but it’s a nice setup.
My newest purchase is also my favourite for portability. The TrumUI Brick is small, but really well-built, especially for the price. The screen is a little smaller than the 3.5 or 4” of its price competitors but the Brick is higher resolution so looks amazing. The controls feel great too. The sound isn’t amazing but at least there’s a headphone jack. The stock software works well, but MinUI and Knulli work well, even though the latter only has a pre-alpha build so far.
