This was how I saw it too. It was a clean sliding kick that became a foul in the follow through... which I would argue was involuntary since it was a 50/50 ball that Herdman won.
Because it was in the box, I could see the PK being justified, and maybe a yellow too, but my understanding is the straight red is generally only for malicious plays (or if Herdman missed the ball clean). This was something that seemed to be missed later in the game where it looked like a Pumas player did the same, took out legs, and got no call at all.
Totally changed the game.
Still, most MLS teams would have lost 2-0 or more under these conditions, so these boys should be incredibly proud. Pumas players were pretty classless during the match and after. Which is a sign they were taking the Cavs seriously.
