I remember when they used to do those seatbelt sting operations all the time where one or two officers would hide and watch cars going by and then radio a car down the road the licence plates of vehicles driven by drivers not wearing seatbelts. They could do that I guess but there just doesn't seem to be an appetite for the city to really clamp down on this even as it seems more and more people seem to be getting back into this bad habit.
I agree. I wonder if there is a different way to enforce that. Wearing a seatbelt to me is commonplace, its just a natural action when I get in the car, I dont even think about it. However, if someone doesnt put on a seatbelt? The car will not let you forget it. Ever.

I wonder if there were a way to do the same thing with phones?

But here is an interesting scenario. I dont drive much, so in our family the person who drives the most, my wife, has the nicest car. Thats fine.

The thing is that the Heads-up-Display shows her texts when she gets them and she can, hands-free, dictate texts.

Here's the thing though...its like the thought in her brain has been completely obliterated that NO ONE ELSE CAN DO THAT!

She sends me texts constantly when she KNOWS I'm driving. "Stop here. Can you pick up that? What do you want for dinner?"

"How come you never answer me or do any of the things I ask???"

I. AM. DRIVING! And you KNOW IT!!

Oh yeah. I come home and I havent read, answered or done any of the things she has texted me to do and she is FURIOUS! But try and explain that I cant check my phone when I'm driving and she just isnt having it!

I appreciate you sticking your neck out. I agree that checking your phone while stopped at a light is better than in traffic. Fair point.

You want to really crack down on this? Truck Drivers. I'm not talking Semis, I'm talking pickups.

A huge percentage of those drivers are either construction or sales, but either way during high-traffic hours a big chunk of them are on the clock. And they're taking calls or sending texts, whatever.

If you see a truck scream past you? That guy has someplace to be. You see a Dodge Ram meandering around? That guy is getting paid by the hour.
