That's a big part of it. Rich country with lots of people wants lots of stuff. Slightly less rich country with fewer people wants less stuff. It's why they have a deficit with almost everyone.
Even then, if you take energy out of the equation, the U.S. has a trade surplus with Canada on most other things.
